Prolotherapy for Foot Pain

At Trevor Lane Podiatry, our aim is to help our patients live pain-free while receiving the best quality foot care.

For this reason, we’re committed to keeping up with all the latest techniques and technologies – like Foot Mobilisation Therapy – and now, prolotherapy for foot pain.

‘Prolotherapy’ may be a big word, but it could play an even bigger role when it comes to relieving joint, ligament and tendon pain in your feet and lower limbs.

Could prolotherapy for foot pain help you

What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is an injection technique designed to stimulate the body’s natural healing process and restore strength in painful soft tissue and joints. Considered safe when performed by an experienced practitioner1, it is used to treat problems such as sprained ligaments, strained tendons, damaged cartilage and osteoarthritis.

Having been practiced for over 75 years, prolotherapy for foot pain is effective for a range of chronic isssues2. In fact, research indicates that it can be more effective for pain relief than local anaesthetic or cortisone, especially in cases of overused tendons3!

Our podiatrists have been personally trained by the expert Dr Margaret Taylor who has been practicing prolotherapy since 1991, and training doctors and podiatrists in the technique for 25 years; as well as Brisbane podiatrist Mr Ben Sibley.

Could Prolotherapy help you?

If you’ve been experiencing foot pain for more than three months, ask us about this option. Prolotherapy treatment first requires a formal diagnosis of a dysfunctional joint, ligament, tendon, or nerve.

Research indicates it helps reduce pain associated with:

  • Chronic heel pain4
  • Sprained ankles5
  • Achilles tendon strains6
  • Tendionpathies (a chronic degeneration of the tendon)7
  • Sprained ligaments around knees8

What does the treatment involve?

Using local anaesthetic and an ultra-fine sterile needle, our podiatrist will inject a special solution into the problem area. This stimulates new tissue growth and the production of collagen, restoring strength to the area, and alleviating the pain.

Generally, a series of 4-8 treatment sessions will be required, with weekly treatments during the first month. A review at Week 4 determines if additional treatments are required – for example, as is commonly needed in the case of Achilles Tendinitis. Our registered podiatrists will recommend a personalised treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

While there are proven benefits of prolotherapy for relieving foot pain and speeding the healing process2, it’s important to note it will not remove the cause of the problem. So, for example, if your heel pain is caused by a collapsed arch, then an arch support will be needed as well to stop the damage recurring.
